I have a long history working in local, regional, and international government organizations, including higher educational institutions.
I will put my experience in management, communications, community relations and outreach, conflict resolution, and financial investigations to work building a community college system—beginning with a commitment to our students—that we can all be proud of.
I have led diverse, multi-ethnic departments overseas for the United Nations and managed multi-million dollar budgets. And, after 18 years leading a large, student-focused department that served all four Peralta Colleges, I have perhaps the deepest understanding of the Peralta Community College District of anyone currently serving in administration or on the board.
Especially in these trying times, we need to make sure that the district has the governance needed for students to succeed. My leadership experience, educational and community commitment is summed up in resolutions and proclamations that I received upon retirement from Peralta's Board of Trustees, the Mayors of Oakland and Alameda, and Special Congressional Recognition from Congresswoman Barbara Lee.
My goal in running for Peralta Colleges Trustee, Area 1, is to bring reform to the costly, dysfunctional Peralta Community College District and to provide students with the teaching and learning opportunities they deserve.
The dire situation at the College of Alameda, Berkeley City College, and Laney and Merritt Colleges in Oakland had been caused largely by Peralta's board. My goal is to bring responsible oversight to the board so that the Peralta Colleges can again provide the badly need educational opportunities to our students.
I have always been passionate about education and our community colleges. Beginning with my mother serving on the Laguna Salada Elementary School Board when I was a kid, to being the first in my family to graduate from college (SF State), to earning a California Secondary-Post Secondary Teaching Credential, education has been a driving force in my life, that's why my wife, Sari, and I have spent our careers in California's public education system.
I am not accepting campaign donations, but you can help by spreading the word about my candidacy. Please talk to your neighbors and friends (wear a mask!) and post on social media. And get ready for my virtual Town Halls coming soon!
A vote for Jeff Heyman for Peralta Community College District Trustee, Area 1, is a vote for real reform at the Peralta Colleges and real educational opportunities for our community's students.
